How to style video captions in Canva
The best caption style feels like part of the video while remaining effortless to read. Good styling is less about adding effects and more about building a clear hierarchy that survives busy footage and small screens.

Choose readability before decoration
Use a typeface with clear letter shapes and enough weight to hold up over video. Thin text may look elegant on a static canvas but disappear when the background moves.
Keep the font large enough for a phone screen. If a sentence does not fit, edit or split the sentence before making all of the text smaller.
Build a dependable caption style
CaptionCraft lets you start with a template and customize position, size, text properties, and effects. Use those controls to create a system you can repeat across the full video.
- 1
Set the base type style
Choose one readable font, a strong weight, and a size that works on the smallest publishing format.
- 2
Create contrast
Use text color, a subtle background, outline, or shadow so captions remain legible over both bright and dark scenes.
- 3
Place captions safely
Keep text away from platform controls and avoid covering faces, product details, or other essential visuals.
- 4
Add emphasis selectively
Use color or effects for the most important words, not every word. A small amount of emphasis creates a stronger hierarchy.
- 5
Preview every scene
A style that works on one frame may fail on the next. Watch the full video and correct local contrast or placement problems.
Match the brand without losing clarity
Bring in one or two recognizable brand choices: a typeface, an accent color, or a restrained text effect. Repeating a small visual vocabulary is more cohesive than changing the caption treatment from scene to scene.
If the brand palette has low contrast, use the brand color as an accent and keep the main caption text neutral. Accessibility and comprehension matter more than using every brand color at once.
Avoid common styling mistakes
Too many words, weak contrast, excessive animation, and captions placed under interface controls are the most common problems. They all make the viewer spend effort decoding the design instead of following the message.
- Do not shrink text just to preserve a long sentence.
- Do not change font, color, and effect at the same time without a reason.
- Do not place captions at the absolute edge of the frame.
- Do not approve a style from a single still image; preview the motion.
